PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS ON THE JOB

The average American works between 35 and 40 hours a week from the time they are 20 years old until the last day they work. We depend on our jobs to pay rent or a mortgage, to buy groceries, and to pay bills. The great majority of us live paycheck to paycheck. When we’re treated unfairly or subjected to bullying or harassment at work, it can cause stress, anxiety, and depression and can affect our relationships. When we’re not paid properly for our work, when we are forced to take time off due to illness or injury, and when we lose a job the impact can be devastating.

That’s why protecting your rights on the job is so important. If you are one of the one in ten American workers who belong to a labor union, you may have somewhere to turn when things go wrong at work; but for nine out of ten workers, their only recourse is in the state and federal laws that protect employees. These are the laws that prohibit discrimination in hiring, firing, and promotions; that require that workplaces be safe; that set wage rates; that protect jobs when workers go out on pregnancy leave or medical leave.

But employment laws can be complicated and enforcing them can be difficult. When you’re dealing with a problem at work, you need information and guidance from someone who has been there before, understands how the law works, and can use it to protect your interests.

I have been practicing law in Connecticut for more than 25 years, representing employees and labor unions to enforce their rights against employers. I do this work because I believes in workers’ rights and I care.

SOME OF THE CASES I HANDLE:

  • non-payment of wages, including overtime, commissions, or bonuses

  • discrimination in the workplace

  • sexual harassment

  • Family and Medical Leave and pregnancy leave issues

  • disability discrimination and workplace accommodations

  • unlawful retaliation at work

  • breaking an employment contract

  • unemployment appeals

What I Do

For more than 28 years, I have represented working people and labor unions to protect their rights and defend their interests against employers. I have also represented community and political organizations when the government interferes with their right to free speech and assembly. I have represented clients before Connecticut public agencies, including the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, the Department of Labor, the Department of Public Health, and others. I have litigated cases in Connecticut courts, up to and including the Connecticut Supreme Court, and federal courts, including the District of Connecticut and the First and Second Circuit Courts of Appeals

MY Story

Before going to law school, I had already worked in a factory, stocked shelves, done data entry, run a cash register, unloaded trucks, and worked in a hospital. During my time as a healthcare worker, I was a shop steward for my union. I represented co-workers in grievances and sat on contract negotiating committees. These are the experiences that led me to believe that every working person has rights and deserves representation. Protecting the rights of workers is the reason I practice law.

MY Mission

I know that when you are dealing with bad treatment at work or when you have been unfairly fired from a job, you’re dealing with powerful emotions, including feelings of frustration, embarrassment, anger, loss, and anxiety about the future. At times like these, you don’t want to listen to a lot of legal jargon or feel pressured to make on-the-spot decisions. It’s critical that you get sound, practical legal advice from someone who understands what you are experiencing and respects your wishes. My mission in providing legal services is to show you your options and help you to make the choices that are best for you.

know your rights

When you consult with me about your legal issues, I want you to feel empowered, which means I want you to feel free to ask questions, to understand how the legal system works, to be aware of the choices that are open to you, and to be able to weigh the possible outcomes of those choices.
